Meg: A Novel of Deep Terror by Steve Alten ★★★☆☆

Book: ★★★☆☆
Movie: ★★★★☆
This doesn’t mean I did not enjoy the book - I did! - it means I appreciated the changes made in the movie version.

Merfolk by Jeremy Bates ★★☆☆☆

washed up mermaid
I was expecting a bloodbath and got a dull swim.

Subterrestrial by Michael McBride ★★★★☆

If you have ever found yourself watching late night "documentaries" on the History Channel, or SyFy, then you know the tasty pool of weird from which Michael McBride writes.

Mer Lovers by Tamsin Ley ★★★☆☆

Yellow tail merman on a waterfall
Welcome to the world of evil mermaids and maligned beautiful mermen desperate for commitment and insta luv.  Now that’s a scenario in need of some human ladies!

Treasure of the Abyss (The Kraken #1) by Tiffany Roberts ★★★★☆

Collage of romance in the water and a kraken with the caption Treasure of the Deep
Reread - This is exactly what the day needed, some kraken fun.

Merfolk May is Kraken Awesome!

Seascape by Stephanie Burke ★★★★☆

Photograph of a handsome merman with reddish tale seated a log at the beach basking in the sun
This was my first merman erotica!

Kraken by M. Caspian ★★★☆☆

Erotic image of a nude muscular man kneeling and leaning back with his eyes closed while an octopus appears to fellate him
Not your average slash. This is a story of a very lonely odd man named Will who misses his ex boyfriend Parker. He has come out to some small god forsaken island to see if they can't work it out.

Homecoming by Susan Palwick ★★★★☆

A young woman made up as a young man among sailors gazing out at the sea the caption reads the sea is not a whore for she is free and joyous but she is a woman
Merfolk May needed one last story! Gareth and Peg are small town kids that dream of the sea, so cue the cross dressing and let the adventures begin!

From the Depths and Other Strange Tales of the Sea (British Library Tales of the Weird #1)

Smiling Red Headed young man with a caption that says The sneering hateful voice... Home so soon my young friend? No you would not believe would you?
No Ships Pass by Lady Eleanor Smith ★★★★½
The intro was correct, this story, written in the early 1930s, could have been the basis for Lost.  Imagine a smaller cast that could not die.  Madness!

Hunting the Merrow (The Merrow Trilogy #2) by Heather Rigney ★★☆☆☆

Chained up mermaid looking sad
Gruesome, brutal, and bleak.

Lots of rape and slaughter.

With a hopeless ending.

Why? Why? Why?!?!

Waking the Merrow (The Merrow Trilogy #1) by Heather Rigney ★★★★☆

Cillian Murphy with blue blue eyes
"They were the wide eyes of her aquatic cousins, unmistakable with the unnaturally large eye-sockets and light-colored irises. He was a merrow."

Into the Drowning Deep (Rolling in the Deep #1) by Mira Grant ★★☆☆☆

Merman in the surf with gills on his ribs
"They sang no songs of their own, only songs stolen from the victims of their hunger.”

Boo to that ending! Boo I say! This book did not live up to the vicious promise of Rolling in the Deep.

Rolling in the Deep (Rolling in the Deep #0.5) by Mira Grant ★★★★☆

Dark alien looking mermaid coming up from the water

A gorrible mermaid tale in the spirit of David Wellington. It's short, fast paced, whimsical, and just sciency enough to hook you before the horror sets in. The eel KY was a nice touch.

The Soul of an Octopus: A Surprising Exploration into the Wonder of Consciousness by Sy Montgomery ★★★★★

A red and purple octopus swimming with the caption Soul of an...
Yesterday I set off on a one mile walk with my dog and this audiobook - that mile became four because I didn't want to stop listening. I made dinner and listened. I ate dinner and listened. Tucked in my bed I listened into the wee hours. I woke up, brushed my teeth and listened. In short, I am completely hooked by this audiobook.

Octopus: The Ocean's Intelligent Invertebrate by Jennifer A. Mather, Roland C. Anderson, James B. Wood ★★★★★

Cute purple octopus strolling along the ocean floor

My love for octopuses began with Sy Montgomery’s Soul of an Octopus. I have not eaten one since, it would be a crime against something magically beautiful and intelligent.

Hunter of the Tide (The Kraken #3) by Tiffany Roberts ★★★★☆

Red female Kraken in the ocean looking dangerous and beautiful

I read this as a sultry part of Merfolk May.

There are sexually aggressive women and then there are kraken women. Once Rhea decides on Randall she will beat the crap out of anyone who gets in her way.
